Name: Yared Berhanu
School: Bole Addis Primary School
Grade Level: 8th grade
Yared was found two and a half years ago. He has been at the Hold My Hand house for only a year and a half. For the first year, the Hold My Hand members would give him 20 birr per day for him to go to a house in Shola to sleep.
That is one dollar per day for sleeping at this house, but the people around this village would give him small tasks like holding something heavy, or simply lending his help to anyone he could and this is the way he made money. He also used to shoe shine.
He would go to Megenagna to work and make money and eat, but he would sleep at a home in the village of Shola for just a dollar a day.
First, he was living with his Uncle. He was born in Dera and didn’t know his father, but he lived with his mother, but life was a struggle for them. They moved from Dera to Addis around Yeka. They moved here for a better life, and to enable Yared to study. When Yared and his mother came to Yeka, they stayed with his mother’s brother, Yared’s uncle. Yared does not know what his mother did for a living in Dera because he was just a kid, but when she came to Yeka she stayed in her brother’s house for a week, and left to return to Dera without Yared. She had a husband in Dera that she left Yared to return to. Also her mother was sick, and she needed to return to take care of her.
Yared was 5 when this happened. Yared did go to school in Dera but only for 1st grade. When he was 6 he started school again in Yeka at Tesfa Birehane from 1st to 6th grade and then dropped out or left school and left Yeka because he was fighting too much with his uncle’s wife. Then he left to live in Megenagna. His girl cousins were treated much better than him by his uncle’s wife. When his uncle’s wife would buy clothes and food she would only buy for her daughters, and order Yared to do all of the work around the house. He left the house to live on the street, but his uncle came looking for him after 15 days and took him to his house again.
After 15 days of being at his uncle’s house, he left again and ended up in Megenagna. After two years of being on the street, Hold My Hand met him. He was at his uncle’s house for six years, until he started living on the street for two years and then for five months Hold My Hand was giving him money to sleep in Shola every night. Then Hold My Hand met his uncle, and wanted to reunifiy him with his uncle and family. So he lived again with his uncle and family for three months, and then could not handle the uncle’s wife, so he returned to the street for only three days. In the night he left his uncle’s house and came to Mikiyas Fekade at Mikiyas’s house in Megenagna. Yared told Mikiyas the situation and that he could not take it, and Mikiyas told him that he had to go back to his family’s house.
Yared said no, and Mikiyas said, if he didn’t go back to his family’s house, to not talk to him again. So Yared ended up back on the street, but after three days the rest of the boys told Mikiyas that Yared did not go home to his uncle’s house but that he was back on the street again. When Hold My Hand realized that his life was too painful at his uncle’s house, he decided to join Yared with the rest of the boys in the first house. And that is how Yared became a part of the boys at Hold My Hand. Yared doesn’t know where his mom is, and Hold My Hand does not have any information to find her, so the reunification process is currently stagnant.
Yared has one brother but they don’t have the same father. The brother is ten. The brother is from the husband that she went back to in Dera. The brother is in Dera right now with the mom and second husband. Yared was six and his brother was one years old when they lived in Dera before Yared was brought to Yeka. So, unfortunately Hold My Hand is unaware of possible ways to reunify Yared currently. But within time after things get settled Yared will be reunified.
